(This is from 2002, but it describes my beauty philosophy perfectly...)
“How to make your skin look beautiful- that is the most basic of the basics.”
Skin Alison Raffaele is a new line of cosmetics that dares to focus on base makeup to gain the beauty of buff. The excellent balance of concealment and transparency is its strong point.
“When we think of makeup, we tend to think of colors, but the most important thing is base makeup. If your skin looks beautiful, any color looks beautiful on it.” However, there were no good base makeup products in the marketplace. Alison Raffaele, a makeup artist who actively works with fashion magazines and bridal magazines, decided to develop the base makeup product to dissolve the frustration. “I tried to make a concealer that hides troubles naturally, a foundation that covers them, and a perfectly transparent powder that completes the makeup,” she states. She submitted her business plan to her father and borrowed business funds from him. She liked makeup from her childhood. When she was ten years old, she used to go to Bloomingdale’s with her mother and chose cosmetics that she could buy with her $10 pocket money. She got makeup and advice on beauty treatment.

When she was sixteen, she had a part time job at cosmetic counters in department stores. She says, “While my friends were working in McDonald’s, I was working in Macy’s and Saks wearing high heels. I was proud of working with adults in the beautiful world.”
Nevertheless, she did not think makeup would be her career at that time. She majored in art history in college and planned to go to graduate school to be a curator. “When I was a sophomore, my friend told me my vocation must be makeup. I thought makeup was just a part-time job, but I noticed that it was what I really wanted to do,” she says. Fortunately, she became a chief assistant of Bobbi Brown right after she graduated college. She made up celebrities and traveled around the world as a makeup trainer and that experience helps her a lot now.

“Under your skin is yourself, so your mind appears directly on your skin. But your skin and your mind do not always agree. Sometimes your skin is tired or gets pimples even though your mind is fresh. Base makeup can fill in the gap.”
“I love people. It is more significant for me to make ordinary women beautiful and happy rather than to make celebrities beautiful.”
The base makeup products Alison devised possess an exquisite combination of concealment and transparency. Beauty base skin tone is a liquid foundation that covers troubles, and gives transparency if used with wet sponge, 5 colors $35.00 each. True concealer 7 colors $22.60 each. Transparent finish powder, $27.50. Skin Alison Raffaele is sold in Henri Bendel and Sephora.
Makeup tools that help provide a delicate finish will be sold this autumn. Powder brush $50.00, small brushes $23.00, foundation sponge $5.00 etc.

1. “Go to bed EARLY: If I don’t get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, I look and feel AWFUL! So after I tuck my 6-year old in, I generally wrap things up and call it a night. I know that doesn’t sound very glamorous, but it gives me the necessary energy and clarity to be my best, both personally and professionally.
2. Pay attention to what my skin needs and treat it accordingly: You don’t have to spend a fortune on skincare, but you do have to use the correct products for your skin type – and please realize that your skin can change day-to-day, season to season and over the general course of time. If I am wearing makeup I always remove it first with DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil. After that I wash my face with a CeraVe cleanser. And as for moisturizers, my needs completely vary throughout the year, from a very sheer oil-free lotion in the summer to a thick, emollient cream in the winter. But no matter what I always keep a jar of Alchmie Forever’s Kantic Calming Cream on hand, in case my skin gets irritated. That stuff is magic!
3. Go for a massage: Being a makeup artist I am constantly touching people and giving them my energy, so whenever I feel either physically or emotionally depleted, I go for a massage. There is a tremendous amount of healing power in a person’s touch, and a good massage literally does wonders for me.

Confused by the multitude of makeup hues? According to New York City makeup pro Alison Raffaele Tatem, these MVP shades work well on most.
BLUSH
A warm peachy-pink flatters all complexions.
SHADOW
A palette of neutral brown shadows complements all eye colors and skin tones. For more variety, look for browns spiked with metallics like copper and gold.
EYELINER & MASCARA
Liner and mascara in brown-black or dark brown are softer and more wearable on most people than all-out black.
Meet Alison Raffaele -- Celebrity Makeup Artist
1. What is your personal beauty philosophy?
Be comfortable and be yourself! If it isn’t comfortable and it isn’t you, you will never look good in it, no matter what it is.
2. If you weren’t a makeup artist, what would you be?
I honestly have no idea. It’s all I have ever wanted to be since I was 10 years old and it is as central to my identity as being female. Being a makeup artist is who I am.
4. Makeup-wise, is there anything you do differently for more mature women so that they look their best?
As we age our faces lose definition. So for older women, lining along the upper eye lid, filling in brows, using a lip liner that matches their lips and subtle eye/cheek contouring are all important. I also don’t do anything overly trendy (ie: glitter, bright/crazy colors) on women over 30, unless it is Halloween. It just looks silly. But that being said, every woman is different, so the most important thing is to make sure the makeup matches the woman, her personality and her lifestyle.
6. Who is your dream celebrity client?
I honestly don’t have one. A person’s “celebrity” doesn’t impress me at all – rather, I am drawn to people who are funny, kind, intelligent, honest, hard-working and devoid of a self-serving ego. Those people are automatically beautiful to me & those are the clients I seek.
